Is General Hospital Setting Kristina Up to Become Sonny’s True Mob Heiress as She Obsesses Over Punishing Ava?

This week’s episodes of General Hospital focused mainly on the aftermath of Kristina’s tumble out of Ava’s suite and into the pool below. The tragic event again reinforces the feeling that Ava better watch her back, as so many are gunning for her. Aside from Kristina’s tragedy, Heather was back on our screens, and the Drew-Nina-Willow drama made a small return as well.

A Tragic Loss

From the beginning of the surrogacy storyline, there were only two outcomes that could play out: Kristina would lose the baby, or there would be a custody battle with Kristina wanting to keep it. Throughout the story, I wavered between both outcomes. I thought Sonny’s manic behavior would be what caused Kristina to lose the baby, and in a way, he did factor into the events that happened due to his and Ava’s custody battle.

Last week I noted Kristina’s baby was in grave danger, as General Hospital seems to have no problem when it comes to killing off children, even unborn babies. That’s precisely what happened, and many viewers were left fuming. Not just because the baby died but because viewers had to endure months of a storyline nobody appeared to enjoy, only to have the baby die.

In a sad nod to history, Sam felt for her sister, knowing what it was like to lose a child. Molly tearing into Sonny and blaming him for what happened to Kristina and the baby was a very powerful scene and great acting from Kristen Vaganos. It also sparked Sonny into going to a dark place, leading him to reflect on everyone who, in his mind, had turned on him over the past few months. As he perched himself on the ledge of the roof of General Hospital, much as Morgan once did, his “dead” son appeared to him to talk Sonny down. More on this in a bit…

The Aftermath of the Accident

As Kristina fought for her and the baby’s life, Natalia yanked Blaze away from the hospital in what can only be described as a bizarre scene. Was this, again, her upbringing? She noted it was a “family moment,” and she and Alison/Blaze weren’t family. It didn’t sit right with me. However, what transpired after was a conversation between the mother and daughter in which Natalia was trying to learn, understand, and be open. Yes, we can call it what it was: the writers used Kristina’s tragedy as a way to open the path of redemption for Natalia, a character who most fans have detested since she stepped onto the scene. Unfortunately, any goodwill generated this week it appears Natalia erases next week, as in the previews at the end of Friday’s show, Natalia was shown beginning Kristina to let go of Alison.

As TJ mourned his child, Molly seemingly began to shut down and shut TJ out. Though she did confront Ava over the baby’s death, it appears this tragedy could be the breaking point in their relationship. I’ve had issues with TJ and Molly’s attitudes a lot throughout this surrogacy storyline, and I honestly have no real feelings one way or the other as to whether they do or don’t make it. As a soap watcher, even if I don’t like a couple, I feel I should be somewhat invested in whether they stay together. If TJ is going to continue to, in some way, blame Kristina for all of this, then I’ll be all in on wanting to see Molly walk away from him as she blames Sonny. I’m still wondering how Molly’s father, Ric Lansing, will factor into this story when he returns.

In the most absurd reaction to Kristina’s accident, Joss ran to Dex for comfort and sex. In times of great stress, humans often seek comfort and distraction, sometimes with emotional or physical connections. However, Joss played an integral part in Kristina’s rescue, so wouldn’t she want to sit vigil at the hospital to find out how Kristina and the baby faired?

Pillgate Is Over!

Returning to Morgan’s appearance to save Sonny from taking his own life, yeah, it was a big gimmick. We knew Bryan Craig was only back for one episode, so most viewers had no big expectations. Was Morgan’s spirit really with Sonny, or was it all in Sonny’s mind? The question was never answered, leaving the door open should Morgan ever return from the dead. However, the experience was what Sonny needed to seek Kevin out and get help, and in the process, they learned his medication was off.

Enter Donna! For some reason, Avery brought Sonny’s medication to her sleepover with Donna, and Donna decided they were vitamins and ate a bunch. Just… What? This didn’t work for me at all, but perhaps it’s just my own experience and bias at work. Having grown up with a mother who, due to various health issues, had several medications, I knew from a young age what a prescription was versus what vitamins were. Well, at least I knew what Flinstones, Smurf, and Spiderman vitamins were! Never once did I think to chow down on my mother’s medications. Also, I imagine even a placebo might not taste good and be tough to chew, so why would she continue to munch on them? Let’s call this what it was, a way to pull Carly into this storyline even more. Sonny was on the path to finding out about the placebos, so this just felt unnecessary.

The Last Jerome Standing

When Brick’s photos showed Ava placing her hands on Kristina, things went from bad to worse for Ava. Still, we know she didn’t push Kristina, who did, in fact, trip while backing away from Ava. Ava stupidly lying to the police about what happened only made the photos more damning. Once again, they are writing Ava as a helpless idiot and, worse, that she needs the incompetent Cates to save her. Cates has just become a bad caricature. He is everything he accused Anna of being: a dirty cop who looks the other way. Even worse, he’s now obstructing justice by removing the pharmacist for Ava, so he can’t reveal what he knows to Sonny. Maybe the pharmacist will tell him the truth? That would be a twist!

Things went from bad to worse when Ava learned Sonny blamed her for the placebo pills, which, in part, she is responsible for. Ava seemingly regained her brain, if only briefly, when Jason visited her. She informed Jason that while she discovered the placebos, she wasn’t the one who had arranged for them, and she stated that it was the work of a powerful enemy Sonny had made. She kept the name of said enemy to herself, noting it was the only thing keeping her alive. However, moments earlier, she told Cates that the pharmacist had never told her who he was working for. So is Ava bluffing, or does she suspect it may have been Valentin?

The character transformations continued this week, with Kristina appearing to morph into a Mob Princess. She’s in a rage over the death of her baby, a term she’s fully embraced now, and she wants Ava dead. Sonny protected all his children from his business for years, never wanting them involved, but none more so than Kristina. He shielded her the most, so it would be a twist if she was the one to follow in her father’s footsteps and business. With so many suspects circling Ava, wouldn’t it be an exciting turn of events if Kristina was the one who ended up looking guilty of trying to kill Ava? But why stop there? What if, while awaiting their trials, Ava and Kristina ended up in Pentonville together, along with Heather?

Final Friday Thoughts

Kristina saw the photos of her and Ava’s fight and what looked like Ava pushing her out the window. Does Kristina not remember what happened? That, as Ava has said, it was a tragic accident? Or is she just so angry that she wants Ava to pay?

Weeks ago, I guessed that even though Laura dropped pursuing Heather’s case being re-opened, Scott would be the one to take it on because of the money involved in suing the medical company that manufactured her faulty hip. Sure enough, here we are, and Heather’s been convinced by the ambulance chaser to go for it. Many viewers have been irate about Heather going free, but it’s probably a done deal at this point. As I’ve noted, the show needs to find a way to keep Daytime Emmy winner Ally Mills around. What I’m not looking forward to is listening to more of Portia screaming at anyone and everyone.

Friday set up the event we all know is coming, and that’s Willow and Drew giving into their passion and making love. Trapped in an elevator, where surprisingly they kept their clothes on and hands to themselves, Drew told her about a fundraiser for The Institute in L.A. Of course, he described the venue as magical. Yes, he said it was magical! When Willow refused to go, he knew it was because of him, so he suggested she go and that he stay home. Naturally, she felt terrible that he’d miss out. Please, we know they are both going! Between Drew running for Congress, and the importance of the fundraiser, reporters will be on hand. My money is on the paparazzi snapping a photo of Willow and Drew in a compromising position.
